Travel Backgammon
2 objects
The game, sized for hand luggage.
A board you can carry on. L'Bag Gammon travels as a baguette bag and opens flat on whatever surface the day offers — a hotel desk, a terrace, a table on a train.
About the collection
The travel sets play the same game as the full-size board, sized for the overhead locker: the board folds out of the bag, and the checkers, dice and doubling cube ride inside it.
Nothing about the play is smaller — thirty points, fifteen checkers a side, the bar and bearing off — only the case that carries it. Full-grain leather, cut in Italy and stitched by hand in Colombia.
Good to know
- Will it fit hand luggage?
- It is sized to travel: the board folds out of the bag and packs back into it, which is what makes it the set that leaves the house.
- Is the play smaller than a full set?
- No. Thirty points, fifteen checkers a side, the bar and bearing off — the same game, in a case that comes with you.
- What is included?
- The board and its checkers, dice and doubling cube. Full-grain bovine leather, sourced in Italy and stitched by hand in Colombia.
Backgammon was played in cafés for a century before anyone put it in a suitcase, and it is still the game that needs the least: a flat surface, two people, and dice that behave. This set takes the suitcase out of it. The leather case is the board, the strap is why it leaves the house, and it folds to the size of the baguette the bag is named for. Open it and the position is already there: twenty-four points, twelve to a side of the bar, thirty checkers — fifteen cream, fifteen black — four dice and a doubling cube. Nothing is assembled and nothing is left behind. Backgammon is one of the oldest games still played, and it is still the one that fits in the least space: a board, thirty checkers, two dice and a cube.
What it is not: a folding board inside a case, or a travel set that only travels between two rooms. The case IS the board, so there is nothing to assemble and nothing left at home. The rules are on this site in full, so nothing has to be learned on the train. Two colourways at $600. Nero is open for pre-order; Rosso has sold out. One thing about this shop before you buy: the collection opens through a game of backgammon against the house. Win and you are in. Lose and you are welcome back tomorrow.
