Two players, thirty checkers, two dice.
One game of backgammon decides the shop.
L'Eterna Vacanza is a leather bag that opens into a backgammon board, and this is the game that guards it. Play one game against the house: win and the collection opens, lose and you are welcome back tomorrow. The board is a real one — thirty points, fifteen checkers a side, and the rules you would play at home, the bar and bearing off included.
The bag underneath it is cut from full-grain leather in Italy and made in Colombia. Unfolded, it is a complete board; folded, it carries fifteen cream and fifteen black checkers, four dice and a doubling cube in a pocket of its own. It is the object the game is protecting, and you can look at it first if you would rather not play for it.
Nothing here is a puzzle. Move your checkers into your home board and bear them off before the house bears off its own. Doubles give you four moves instead of two. A checker left alone on a point can be hit and sent to the bar, where it has to come back on before anything else moves.
